Many writers, myself included, face both the expectation and the opportunity to become more than a writer.

I could be on a podcast, give a speech, go on a book tour, do radio interviews, make videos – and if I do all that, I might even end up on TV!

But I’ve been fighting, tooth and nail, to create on my own terms and communicate in my own ways, regardless of the result.

That means turning down a lot of things, knowing they would drain both my inspiration and my aspiration.

I often think about Enya, who lives in a castle with her cats, not doing concerts or interviews even though she has millions of fans. She taught me that I can ignore everyone’s expectations, and still succeed.

I can, and I am – and so can you.

P.S. I write from my personal experience as an autistic. What I share is not a substitute for advice from an autistic medical professional. Also, some of my opinions have changed since I first wrote them.
