I want to acknowledge some ways in which autistic people are being extra brave right now.

We’re making big changes to our routines, though we don’t even like to make small ones.

We’re trying to follow new social rules, though we can’t even fathom the old ones.

We’re bearing the discomfort of masks, though we aren’t even comfortable in most clothing.

We’re surrounded by faces on Zoom, though we feel the intensity of even a single face.

We’re in a year full of unprecedented surprises, though any surprise at all can throw us off balance.

Sometimes, it’s too much to handle. Sometimes, all we can do is make it through the day.

Even that is brave.

P.S. I write from my personal experience as an autistic. What I share is not a substitute for advice from an autistic medical professional. Also, some of my opinions have changed since I first wrote them.
